Trees for Small Gardens

Ideas for Small Garden Trees (Up to about 4m):

Acer griseum – The Paperbark Maple with its peeling red and cinnamon bark. Good autumn colour

Alnus glutinosa ‘Imperialis’ – Very graceful, deeply cut-leaved form of our native alder, slender pyramidal form, catkins followed by cones. 

Amelanchier lamarckii -  A small bushy tree with bronze young growth, white flowers and rich autumn colour.

Amelanchier 'La Paloma' - A small bushy tree with masses of snowy white flowers in April.

Arbutus unedo - A handsome native evergreen tree or large shrub, with persistent strawberry-like fruits.  

Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Doorenbos' – A small tree ideal for planting as a specimen or in clumps, beautiful white bark within three years. 

Catalpa x erubescens 'Purpurea' - More floriferous than C bignonioides. The leaves emerge a deep purple/black and turn to deep green. Can be coppiced.  

Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy''  - A small round-headed tree with striking purple foliage - orange, red, yellow & purple in autumn. Pink flowers. 

Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' A very small tree with spectacular pink flowers in spring. Most soils including dry/chalky. Open sunny position for best flowering.

Cornus 'Eddies White Wonder' - A stunning small tree. Large white bracts in May and rich autumn leaf colour. 

Cornus kousa 'Cappuccino' - A flowering dogwood with bronze foliage & handsome flowers.

Cornus florida 'Cloud Nine' - Large white bracts and fiery autumn leaf colour.  

Cornus florida 'Rainbow' - A large shrub or small tree, dense upright habit. Abundant white flowers in April/May

Cornus kousa 'Chinensis' - A small tree with bigger leaves, abundant fruits and rich autumn colour

Cornus kousa 'White Fountain' - Produces profuse large white bracts that weigh the branches down - hence fountain.

Cotoneaster 'Cornubia' - A vigorous small semi-evergreen tree with masses of red fruits in autumn. Grows quickly, useful as screening.

Crataegus laevigata 'Pauls Scarlet' - Pretty dark pink double flowers. Small red berries in autumn and good autumn colour.  

Crataegus laevigata 'Rosea Flore Pleno' - Highly ornamental and robust thorn with a profusion of double pink flowers during may.  

Crataegus persimilis prunifolia – A striking small round headed tree with showy fruits and good autumn colour, white blossoms.

Davidia involucrataLarge white flower bracts in may, orangey-brown peeling bark, shiny bright green leaves and green berries which turn purple in autumn.

Euonymous europeaus 'Red Cascade' - A splendid large shrub. Rich red autumn foliage studded with red and orange fruits, on arching branches.

Euonymous phellomanus - A large Chinese shrub with corky-winged shoots. Attractive autumn colour and pink fruits.

Euonymus planipesA striking large Asian shrub/small tree with rich autumn colour and scarlet fruits. 

Euonymus planipes 'Sancho' - A small tree with large yellow flowers and bright red fruits in Autumn.

Halesia carolinaA large shrub or small tree, with attractive, pendant, flowers.  A useful tree which can be planted alongside buildings, it will tolerate partial shade.

Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii' - The best form of this tree with long pendant chains of yellow flowers in May. 

Malus 'Butterball' -  A small spreading tree with white flushed pink blossom and heavy crops of large butter coloured fruits. 

Malus 'Jelly King' - Upright/compact tree. White blossoms and large persistent fruits that last well into winter. Good for cooking.

Malus 'Mary Potter' - A small pendant tree with white blossom and persistent red fruits. 

Malus x robusta 'Red Sentinel' - Small tree. White-blushed blossom in spring. Autumn colour. 

Malus transitoria - A beautiful small tree with profuse white blossom amber fruits and good autumn leaf colour. 

Malus transitoria ‘Thornhayes Tansy’ – A pretty very dissected leaved form of this species.

Malus Scarlett - Young leaves emerge copper complimenting dusky pink blossoms.

Prunus 'Accolade' - A very pretty form, with semi-double, pink flowers, over a long period. One of the best hybrid cherries.  

Prunus ‘Shogetsu' – An attractive small flat-topped tree with white blossom. One of the latest Japanese cherries to flower

Prunus 'Snow Goose' - An attractive small goblet shaped tree with profuse large single pure white blossom in April and rich autumn leaf colour.

Prunus 'The Bride' - A dainty small bushy tree with large early single white flowers, central pink blush.

Quercus Palustris 'Green Pillar' -  A narrowly columnar form of this vigorous healthy species with brilliant red autumn colour.

Sorbus Autumn Spire - An upright, columnar form. Good for gardens, vivid autumn colour, bright yellow berries. Pretty white flowers in spring.

Sorbus aucuparia 'Ember Glow'' - Bluish green leaves changing to oranges/reds in autumn.  Persistant red fruits. Upright habit

Sorbus 'Joseph Rock' - Amber-yellow late summer berries. Folliage mid-green turning reds, oranges, purple, orange in autumn.

Sorbus 'Eastern Promise' - Small with an oval crown. Leaves orange/red in autumn. Rose-pink berries.

Sorbus folgneri 'Emiel' - Narrow pointed green leaves with a silvery underside. Clouds of white flowers turn into clusters of orange berries in autumn. Spreading habit up to 4 m, tolerates coastal locations. 

Sorbus 'Ghose' - A small, upright growing scab resistant Himalayan rowan, with large healthy leaves and large clusters of red fruit.  

Sorbus 'Indian Summer' - A large shrub/small tree with intense autumn leaf colour of crimson and purple and masses of pink fruits  - Very spectacular.

Sorbus 'scalaris' - A small, shrubby species, with frond-like, pinnate foliage and flattened heads of red fruit. Good autumn colour.

Sorbus ulleugensis 'Olympic Flame' - A small, upright growing tree with large pinnate leaves that turn vivid orange/red in autumn with vivid orange/red berries.
